3. Although many parts of Spanish America relied on forced indigenous labor during the sixteenth century, my focus here is on the transport of enslaved sub-Saharan Africans. The pathways followed by the vast majority of indigenous captives during this period were substantially different—and perhaps even more difficult to trace—than the Atlantic routes described in this article, even if these two trades overlapped in many other ways, as discussed by Erin Stone in this volume.
